Protecting Montana's Outdoor Heritage From hiking in Glacier, to hunting in the Elk Horns, to riding in the plains, or fishing Fort Peck Lake, Max knows how important the state's outdoor heritage is to his fellow Montanans.

And as an avid outdoorsman, and Chairman of the Congressional Sportsman Caucus, Max has consistently fought to increase access to public lands, and protect Montana's blue-ribbon streams so Montanans can enjoy these lands for generations to come.

Max knows that Montanans have an obligation to give their children a better place then they inherited, and Max is doing everything he can to make that dream a reality.

Protecting Montana and the Nation's Outdoor Heritage

  • Max authored and negotiated the provision to permanently ban oil and gas drilling on federal lands in the Rocky Mountain Front.
  • Max has been a leader in the fight against mining in the North Fork Flathead River which could have devastating consequences on Flathead Lake's water quality and outdoor heritage.
  • Max created the Canyon Ferry Trust to fund restoration and access projects along the Missouri River.
  • Max is leading the fight for adequate flows on the Bighorn River to protect this world class fishery.
  • Max is fighting to repeal Forest Service (FS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) user fees to ensure that Montanans have access to their public lands.
  • Max was the first elected official to raise concerns about the New World Mine and helped broker the New World Mine agreement that protected Yellowstone Park from devastating mining proposals.
  • Max pushed the Forest Service to agree to the full removal of Mike Horse Dam which will protect the legendary Blackfoot River from contamination.

  • Max authored the Endangered Species Recovery Act that provides tax credits for farmers and ranchers who help recover endangered species.
  • Max is leading the fight to extend the production tax credit for renewable energy to enable more products like Judith Gap.
  • Max helped to create the CREBs program so local governments and co-ops can help lead the way in developing renewable energy.
  • Max's groundbreaking energy bill would create the first ever tax credits for cellulosic ethanol, plug-in hybrids, and carbon capture sequestration.

Working For Clean Air And Drinking Water

  • Max led the fight and was a primary author of the Clean Air Act amendments which have substantially improved air quality.
  • Max helped pass the Safe Drinking Water Act which is helping keep our drinking water supplies pure and safe.
  • As a senior member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, Max has consistently supported legislation to clean up industrial polluted sites called brownfield sites across the country – including sites in Lewistown and Missoula.

  • As a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Max helped write the America's Climate Security Act – the first of its kind to address global warming.
  • Max helped to pass the first increase in CAFÉ standards in 30 years.
  • Max has been a champion in the fight for a renewable portfolio standard which would drive demand for clean, renewable energy from sources such as wind, geothermal, and solar.

Reforming the Army Corp of Engineers

  • Max helped to pass a provision requiring independent peer review for Army Corp of Engineer Projects.
  • Max authored a provision that will provide $30 million authorization for the Army Corps of Engineers to protect and restore the Yellowstone – America's longest free-flowing river.

Getting Libby A Clean Bill Of Health

  • Max uncovered EPA's failure to conduct the necessary toxicity studies to setup an adequate cleanup standard.
  • Max used his leadership to force the EPA to begin proper toxicity studies and begin adequate cleanup to protect Libby residents.
  • Max is investigating EPA's failure to announce a public health emergency which would ensure that Libby is given a clean bill of health and provide health care for Libby residents.
  • Max created the CARD Clinic in Libby and continues to fight for adequate funding to deliver the proper health care that Libby residents need and deserve.

A Voice For Montana's National Parks

Montana's National Parks are crucial to Montana's economy. Max has been Montana's leading voice to make sure our parks get the care and protection they need. Max has shown his leadership in getting Glacier's Going-to-the-Sun Road repaired, pressing for infrastructure improvements in Yellowstone National Park, and fighting against mining in the North Fork Flathead River. Max will continue to lead the fight for the protection of Montana's special places.

Protecting The Alaskan Wildlife Refuge

Max has been a lifelong opponent of drilling in the Alaskan Wildlife Refuge (ANWAR). He has opposed past attempts to drill in ANWAR with both his voice and his vote, and he will continue to do so in the future. Max Baucus deeply believes that America's irreplaceable natural heritage must be preserved for all of our children and grandchildren.
